Does health insurance cover laser hair removal for medical reasons?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

I have had facial hair growth due to medical condition (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). I wonder if health insurance companies might cover at least part of the cost for laser hair removal. Has anyone had this type of experience?

I seriously doubt it since that part of your condition is cosmetic.

Are you taking any medication for your PCOS?

I am taking metformin and am on a weight loss program. My dr. told me that once everything stablizes the hair growth and periods will normal out

Has anyone tried permanent hair removal. And what kind of effects it has? Does it hurt?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

I want to try laser hair removal but I am not so sure. I am afraid of scars and stuff like that.

BEFORE COMMITTING TO IT:
1. Find a reputable salon/clinic with properly trained staff (people with a background in nursing are the best)
2. Go for a consultation and get all the facts before you make a decision. They might do a free test for you on your arm so that you can experience the sensation (it ain't a walk in the park for some people – everyone's got a different pain threshold)

FAST FACTS:
* Laser hair removal typically requires multiple sessions (between 4 and 6 minimum) because hair grows in a cycles.
* You may be required to pay a high price PER session and then after the minimum number, you can either be put on a maintenance program (where you pay per zap) or go back to them for free treatments (pricing purely depends on the salon/clinic).
* It's fine for you to wax/shave inbetween sessions
* The laser works best on dark hair on light skin
* For fine hair (like on your upper lip), the minimum number of sessions can be up to 10
* Skin on different parts of the body has different sensitivity levels (i.e. your eyelid skin is different to the skin on your back, right?). Having your underarms lasered might be almost painless while having your bikini lasered could leaving your skin burning for a while afterwards.
* To help with the pain during the treatment, you can go to a pharmacy and get an anaesthetic cream (ask the clinic/salon to recommend a good one to you). This cream has to be applied a short time before the treatment.

THE PROCESS:
- You and the nurse/beautician will be required to wear special goggles during the procedure
- The nurse/beautician will spread a gel over the affected area.
- While using the laser, a jet blowing cold air will make the gel icy cold in order to help numb the pain once the nurse/beautician starts "firing away".
- Once treatment of the area is complete, the nurse will wipe away the gel and apply a soothing cream/lotion.
- Afterwards, you may be given a coldpack to put on the affected area to help numb any lingering pain you might experience.

BOTTOM LINE:
- The results are very much worth the pain.
- DON'T go for 1 or 2 sessions then give up ("pain" is not a reason to quit). Commit yourself to going for the minimum number of sessions (even if you decide to spread the sessions out over a longer period).

Has anyone bought the SILK’n product – at home laser hair removal kit?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Apparently this product has been sold in the US for quite some time, i just wanted to know if it actually works or not. I am sick of going to laser clinics and spending so much money, so if this Do It Urself at home LIGHT based technology works in removing hair permanently, i am more than willing to spend money on it.

Please let me know your experiences with this Light based technology.

Thanks

i have not bought it, but i’m thinking about it. i was going to go for the Tria laser, but then i saw this on youtube:

i don’t know which one i should get!!! the tria takes longer to do, but the results are more permanent….the silk’n is loud and more painful…

How effective is laser hair removal?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I would like to get laser hair removal on my back, but I would like to know how effective it is. I have heard different opinions in the past. How long does it last? Are there any dangers?

It depends on many things.

First of all laser removal is best with dark hairs on light skin. It is usually NOT suitable for dark skinned people and/or people with silvery white / grey hairs.

Ignoring this results in burned skin and intact hair. Without wishing to go into the details too much, the laser ideally passes through the skin until it comes to the hair bulb – which being darker than the skin, absobs most of the power from the laser (usually 808nm near IR), other colours can be used including DPSS (532nM green) but all have the same basic limitations. Skin needs to be fairly light and hair fairly dark.

If you are determined to remove light hair, you can attempt to do this by applying a special carbon powder to the skin and scrubbing it in – the effect – at least in theory – is to get the carbon to get into the hair shaft and provide enough darkenss for the hair bulb/root to absorb the power.

Ask how long it will take for a complete session on the back – if they say more than about 30-45 minutes then they are using an older laser which is either the argon/ion type OR an underpowered diode laser.

A powerful diode laser will give GOOD results if used properly – and a powerful laser will EASILY handle an entire back in 30 – 45 minutes.

You will need this repeated at least two or three times because of the different stages hair goes through in the growing cycle.

Can anyone share their experiences of permanent hair removal?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Was it successful? How expensive was it? Were there multiple sessions? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I had 4 laser hair removal treatments on the back of my neck 4 years ago and none of the hair has returned. My wife had her bikini area and Underarms done and she also had very good results. The cost for me was around $750 and she paid $1195 for her UA's and bikini line. We are both very happy with the results.

If you decide to get a laser treatment done, make sure to go to someone with alot of experience and fairly new equipment. The treatment works great unless the laser operator is clueless or the equipment is ineffective.

The attached site have more information and offer providers who have received good customer service scores.
