I have been in China recently and people play World of Warcraft so crazy. People play it in toilet, in restaurant, in casino, in bedroom, and they have millions of internet cafes which have girls to sit next to you and play with you. People are just crazy about it. Some people make some communist league in World of Warcraft and kill others as a team of thousband. Even people believe in Buddhism play in temples now while they beg for money. How come it is so crazy about WWC?
Okay so everyone has already mentioned the fact that the game rocks, and given reasons why. But you ask why so many ppl in china are playing it? Because there are several companies out there that actually PAY them to play 14 hours a day grinding mobs, loot, gold, etc. and then advertise power-leveling and using REAL money to buy gold on the game. Last I heard you could get 11,000 gold for like $1500 real money.
Problem with this is it screws up the game's economy, and it hurts us honest players that put in OUR time working to build our chars up, struggling to get things to make us on an even playing field.
Now toss in a few players that have paid real money to get power leveled and bought gold, giving them access to items instantly that would take an honest player weeks to afford. This drives prices up, and makes it so that it takes MUCH longer to get the things we need because all the farmers are wiping it from the game so quickly (ie herbs and ore).
It's against Blizzard policy and a direct violation of the game's agreement, and THANK YOU Blizzard for finally stepping up and suing those companies that have been doing this service. There is actually a player representing all us other players in a civil lawsuit to get rid of the gold farmers, and make the game fair again.
Sure there are those ppl that do play the game for fun over there, but there are also a LOT of them over there that are being paid to play, farm items and money on the game, so that the companies can make money selling those virtual things for real money.
Let's hope that this gets taken care of, and evens out the playing grounds again

The expansion made it a grind, so people have to play alot to stay even with their friends. Otherwise they get behind, get kicked out of the guild and lose their phat lewts.

I don't get it either. I think it is just the very large enviroment with millions of people. The graphics were to childish for me, and I didn't like how clunky the quests felt. I personally am eagerly waiting for a game by flagship studios(previously blizzard north, makers of diablo 1&2), titled HellGate London. It looks awesome.

Well, alot has happened since World of Warcraft has come out. People have been playing ever since, and many are still creating accounts to play with their friends. The expansion pack has made it even crazier. People are buying the game just because of it and then 'love' it. Then they tell everyone they know, and they play it. Most of these people are players of Everquest and Everquest 2 who transitioned over to WoW. All I can say, is that Blizzard must be making alot of money.
In short, everybody and their brother plays it, and more are joining up each day.

World of Warcraft follows a simple psychological principle: do things, and you'll be rewarded. This is how RPG games have always worked, but WoW adds in community interaction on a wider scale than ever before. Rather than trying to do everything alone, you can befriend someone you've never met before, and go off on your adventures together, while reaping benefits equally.
Another good point about the game is what you have pointed out, EVERYONE plays it nowadays. The game is about accomplishing tasks and receiving rewards, and the more rewards you get, the greater and more powerful your character becomes, and the greater your character is over EVERYONE ELSE'S character. It's grown into a lifestyle, since in normal life, you may work hard for hours and not have anything to show for it. In WoW, you can work hard for a few hours and have everything in the world to show for it. It's extremely enticing, but beware! WoW has been known to be very addicting, founding many support groups for extreme addicts (It's been known as World of WarCrack).

Its so addicting simply because of the reasons you mentioned. You can have a giant guild of your best friends. Thanks to this guild you are able to get the best rewards so much faster. It allows you to stay connected to your friends no matter where they might be. Plus, even girls like to play this game.
Note: its not wwc by the way, it WoW; just a heads up ^_^

ok.. Starboy hits this answer directly on the head, I just wanted to add a few things.
When you play a First person Shooter game, you can own. you can go 25-0 and have everyone go. "OMG that guy is super leet. " But when you go into the next match you start back at level 1. That 25-0 doesn't mean shit now.
Other games work off the principle that you are only as good as what you have done for me lately. You are only as good as your last match.
WoW on the other hand, allows you to build up not only your gear, and skills, but also your reputation. People are able to become infamous amongst the World of Warcraft community. Of the millions that play it, the serious players can name the tags of all other serious players, and a lot of them are able to compete to be the best.
It is much like some of the top contributors in yahoo answers are. They are competing against each other to try to the best. they have leaders boards on here and they want to be the top. In turn, they are able to learn the names and infamous natures of some of the top answerers.
